Vernon C. Wolfrey

Vernon C. Wolfrey, 87, of Clarksville, MD passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025.  Vernon was born 1937 in Olney, Maryland to Charles and Lavinia Wolfrey.  He grew up in Burtonsville with his two sisters Grace and Dorothy.  He attended Sherwood High School while playing baseball, basketball and football, he excelled at baseball and continued playing club and Industrial League ball after high school eventually going on to play competitive softball for many years.

Vernon married his high school sweetheart Doris (Becraft) and built family home in Burtonsville where Vernon and Doris raised two sons Eric and Michael.  He was a Master Plumber and proud member of the Plumbers & Gasfitters Local 5.

After losing Doris to breast cancer, he met Helen (Martin) and they were married in 2002.  He gained two stepchildren, Sandra and Richard and their families.  Vernon and Helen continued to live in the house he had built in Clarksville.  They enjoyed and were constantly entertained by their cats and the variety of wildlife that frequented their yard.

He was a true family man, very active in all grandkids sporting events and lifetime milestones, rarely did he miss a game or meaningful event in their lives.  He remained close with his high school friends up until his passing.  The camaraderie of weekly breakfast gatherings with high school friends was typically a highlight of the week.  A diehard Redskins, Orioles and University of Maryland fan he rarely missed a game.  He was a very genuine person, quick to help someone in need, say hello and engage in a conversation with a friend or new acquaintance especially if talking sports or construction.

Vernon is survived by his wife Helen, son Eric Wolfrey (wife Angel), son Michael Wolfrey (wife Crystal), step children, Sandra Martin and Richard Martin, grandchildren Taylor, Zach (wife Hannah), Nicolette, Julia, Christina, Ryan, Hailey and, step grandchildren, Chase,  Austin, Shannon, and great grandchildren Kennedy and Elena, and step great grandchild Joe, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

A Visitation will be held on Friday, June 20, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:00am, with a funeral service starting at 11:00am at Donaldson Funeral Home of Clarksville, P.A., 12540 Clarksville Pike, Clarksville, MD  21029, burial at Union Cemetery, Burtonsville, MD, followed by a luncheon and celebration of life at Eric and Angel’s home in Glenelg, Md.
