Shirley Ann (Ehret) Hatheway was born in Canton, OH on October 9, 1935, to Joseph and Dorothy (Slutz) Ehret. She finished elementary school at St. Mary in Canton and high school at Canton Central Catholic with the class of 1953. She obtained a BS degree in Nursing from St. John’s College in Cleveland four years later. She was employed for several years in Cleveland as a public health nurse. Later she worked for the Canton Visiting Nurse Society until her marriage in 1961 to Tom Hatheway, a former classmate from Central Catholic HS, and moved to Huntington WV where Tom was employed. In Huntington she taught in the nursing school at St Mary’s hospital.
Shirley made two more major moves over the years, first to Chicago then to Columbia, MD. Her daughters settled in comfortably, being educated in local schools and all three are alumnae of the University of Maryland, College Park. In the meantime, Shirley devoted her efforts to raising her daughters and later returned to work with the Columbia Medical Plan. In 1990 she joined Tom in retirement.
She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Thomas W. Hatheway, daughters Lynn Flynn (Ed Glabus), Paula (Bob) Menton and Jane (Christopher) Maus, seven grandchildren, and former son-in-law James Flynn: sisters Mary Lou Szink and Charlene Salapack, brothers Paul and Dr. Donald Ehret. She was predeceased by brother Bob (Linda) Ehret of Lake Helen, FL.
