Sharon Eileen Johnson-Agueda was born in Springfield, Oregon. Sharon grew up in Portland, Oregon where she attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington and obtained a degree in political science. She then attended Tufts University, where she obtained a Masters Degree at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Medford, Mass.
Her interest in diplomacy attracted her to a position at the U.S. Department of State in Washington D.C. where she met her future husband, Orlando Agueda. Sharon lived in Brazil, where she became fluent in the Portuguese language. On retirement she took up residence in Washington D.C. and later moved to Columbia, Maryland, but remained in contact with relatives in Brazil.
