Sharon grew up in Portland, Oregon where she attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington and obtained a degree in political science. Sharon lived in Brazil, where she became fluent in the Portuguese language. On retirement she took up residence in Washington D.C. and later moved to Columbia, Maryland, but remained in contact with relatives in Brazil.
