Rodger W. Hippen

Rodger Wayne Hippen, 64 of Columbia Md. suddenly passed on September 8, 2023. He was born in Wilmar, MN in 1958 to Lorin and Elizabeth (Joan) Hippen. Rodger attended the University of Maryland Baltimore County where he received his bachelor’s degree in economics in 1983. Rodger started working for the US Department of Labor as an Economist beginning in 1983 and enjoyed a long and rewarding career working on the Producer Price Index until his passing. Rodger enjoyed his work and cherished time spent with his co-workers. 

Christian faith and family were very important to Rodger. He enjoyed sports, cars and weightlifting, but his favorite activity was spending time with his daughter Tori who was his main pride and joy.

Rodger is preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth Joan Hippen. He is survived by father Lorin Hippen, daughter Victoria (Tori) Hippen, brother Randall Hippen and wife Sandra (Melanie), sister Lori Scarbel and (husband Steven), nephews Brandon Scarbel, Ryan Scarbel (wife Jaimie), Tyler Hippen, Matthew Wagner, Benjamin Wagner, Joshua Amburgey and Noah Amburgey and nieces Kaitlin Hippen, Sydney Scarbel and Brittanie Coleman (husband Bill), great aunt Nancy, aunts Gale and Arlys, uncle John, cousins Debbie, Linda, Sandy and Chrissy, and ex-sister-in-law Tricia Rothlingshofer.   He will surely be missed and we take great comfort in knowing he had faith in God. Your thoughts and prayers for his daughter and family, friends, and colleagues are very appreciated.

Funeral Services will be on Saturday September 16, 2023 at 10:30am at St John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6004 Waterloo Rd Columbia MD, with a Celebration of Life to follow in the fellowship hall since interment is private. The family has asked in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to THON at Penn State, a student-run philanthropy committed to enhancing the lives of children and families impacted by childhood cancer. Rodger was always supportive of pediatric cancer research throughout the years since Tori had cancer as an infant. Rodger loved Penn State ever since Tori committed there and was extremely passionate about the mission of THON especially with Tori’s increasing involvement in THON fundraising through Whiplash her Hip-Hop dance team.
