On November 8 2022, Michael Huckvale Merrill of Ellicott City, MD passed. Mike was 58. He was born on June 2, 1964 to George and Mary “Charlene” Merrill in Baltimore, MD.
Mike was a dedicated civil servant. He was a Computer Scientist at the Department of Defense for 34 years and was recognized in 2022 with a Distinguished Civilian Service Medal. He loved computers and technology, especially high performance computing. Mike was a problem solver and innovative thinker; he was recognized for inspiring and leading numerous large projects over the course of his career. He loved to share his knowledge and mentored many colleagues over the years—sometimes calling them his kids, sometimes his minions, but always calling them his friend.
Outside of work, Mike loved the outdoors. Traditional archery was a passion of his, and he taught both of his daughters how to shoot when they were 2 years old. He loved to camp and sit around the firepit. He loved to travel with his family and explore new places. He loved “sharp pointy things”—collecting knives, throwing axes, carving bows and spoons. Mike also loved evenings with friends cheating at Killer Uno or slaying enemies while playing Dungeons and Dragons.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 18 years Becky and their beloved daughters Kaylee and Shellie. He is also survived by his mother Mary “Charlene” Merrill and siblings Linda Taylor (husband Corey), Phillip Merrill (wife Valeria), Stephen Merrill, and Aaron Merrill (wife Vicky) and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Mike is preceded in death by his father George Merrill.
