Adored wife and mother, Mary Ellen Salkeld (nee Calabrese) passed away in her sleep on February 23, 2023 at her home in Fulton, MD.
She’s survived by her husband of 51 years and love of her life, Neale Salkeld, as well as her son Scott (Becca), and daughters Jean Marie (Steve Battista) and Amy (Master Sgt. Patrick David), and grand children: Annabelle, Maddie, Sean and Jack Salkeld; Aloysius, Eddie, Mickey and Fia Battista; Carolyn and Emma David.
Mary Ellen is also survived by her brothers, John (Marcia), Jay (Patti), Bobby (Jackie) and Kevin Calabrese (Kathy), and her sister, Cathy Salkeld (John).
She was born in Washington, D.C. on Sept 24, 1949 to Helen and Alphonse Calabrese, the fourth of six children who lived in College Park, MD. She attended nearby St. Jerome’s Catholic School in Hyattsville and graduated from Seton High School in 1967.
In the spring of 1971, Mary Ellen graduated from Mercy School of Nursing in Baltimore, then married Neale that fall and began her nursing career at Providence Hospital in Northeast D.C. where she would work in the emergency room for the next 42 years.
Along the way, Mary Ellen remained an active member of St. Jerome’s school and parish, helping with the healing masses, Food for the Homeless, and other charitable programs while assisting with the needs of the priests and nuns.
She spent many hours cheering for her children (and then grandchildren) on various athletic fields and enjoyed watching their performances. She cherished time spent with family and friends at the shore in Ocean City, NJ and on the Chesapeake Bay.
Visitation hours will be held on Wednesday, March 1 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Donaldson Funeral Home of Clarksville, P.A., 12540 Clarksville Pike, Rt 108 Clarksville, Maryland 21029. A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, March 2 at 10:00 AM at St. Louis Catholic Church, 12500 Clarksville Pike Clarksville, MD 21029.
