Marcia Davis Obituary

Marcia Nanciella Davis, “Chickie”, age 86, of Silver Spring, Maryland, died Thursday February 11, 2021.

She was born April 13, 1934, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Dale Thomas Purtle and Anna Marie Kudla. She was the beloved wife of the late Donald Allen Riggin, and the late Leonard Nettleton Davis, both having served in the USAF.

Marcia was a natural artist, always honing her skills through education and applying them to her professional career as a draftsperson/technical illustrator for over 25 years at Watkins-Johnson and SAIC. She was on the forefront of using computers in her highly technical field, but never shied away from tackling the exceptionally complex hand-drawn technical schematics. Upon retirement in Bethany Beach, Delaware, she focused on her creative artwork which was frequently inspired by the nature and beauty of the Maryland Eastern shore and countryside where she loved to travel and explore. Inspiration was also drawn from her travels to Japan. An accomplished and recognized artist and printmaker, she was both an officer and a member of Olney Art Association and Rockville Art League, a member of Maryland Printmakers, Printmakers Plus, MD Pen Women, Rehoboth Art League, The Miniature Painters, Sculptors, and Gravers Society of Washington, DC, and a co-founder of the Southeastern Delaware Artists Studio Tour.

Marcia was a wonderful mother and touched so many people’s lives in countless ways. She had a strong faith and was a lifelong member of The Episcopal Church.  She always had a smile on her face and laugh that you could hear for miles, that will never be forgotten. Marcia also adored her crazy little poodle Peaches.

Marcia is survived by a brother, Paul Purtle, her sons Ralph Riggin (wife Alison Riggin), Ronald Riggin (wife Karen Riggin), and David Riggin (wife Bernardita Riggin), five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Marcia will be incredibly missed.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private ceremony will be held at the Rockville Cemetery.
