Obituary

Luke Marcus Hauffe, age 1 year and 1 month, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in Clarksville, Maryland on August 20, 2023.

Born July 27, 2022 in Silver Spring, Maryland at Holy Cross Hospital, Son of Richard and Adriana Hauffe.

Unknown to Luke’s parents at his birth, Luke was born with a severe incurable genetic condition affecting all of the muscles in his body, especially his respiratory system. Luke spent the first 3 months of his life at Children’s National Hospital in the NICU, where his parents took turns spending the days and nights caring for and watching over him with the help of the hospital staff. Luke was transported home on November 1, 2022 entering home hospice care with what was believed to be a very short timeline. Days went by. Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. Luke was defying the odds.

Luke shocked everyone by celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas, and then many more holidays and celebrations with his family. Luke continued to grow and develop and exceed all expectations, achieving milestone’s people never thought possible. Despite Luke’s condition he eventually became strong enough to play with his toys, sit in a chair and hold his head up, learned to crawl with the aid of a skateboard built by his father, and even had enough strength to stand with the aid of a standing support. Though unable to swallow due to his condition, Luke had a love of watermelon. Seeing Luke taste and enjoy food was for the first time was a miracle. Luke also loved watching Elmo. His beautiful eyes would light up whenever his parents sang “Elmo’s Song”. They eventually changed the words to make it “Lulu’s Song” (Lulu was a nickname given to Luke by his mother).

Luke was the shining light that brought happiness to his parents. His smile, melted the hearts of everyone that met him and even those that only saw him in pictures and videos. Though he only started babbling and saying mama and dada, his beautiful blue eyes spoke volumes. His eyes spoke of pure love and happiness. Through all of Luke’s struggles due to his condition, he was a very happy and loving child, one pure of heart.

The morning of August 20, 2023 the world lost a beautiful and gentle soul. Luke will be missed by all, but most especially his parents. Luke was his parent’s life. For one year all they knew was Luke, everything was for Luke. They gave him everything they had and Luke did the same in return.

Luke is survived by his parents, Richard and Adriana.

A Celebration of Luke’s Life will be held at the family’s home. Please contact the family for the date and time by emailing Richard.hauffe@gmail.com.  The family requests for all who attend, wear casual, colorful attire (no black).
