John Charles Baar, Jr., DDS.

Dr. John Charles Baar, Jr. DDS, age 78, of Fulton, Maryland passed away on March 3, 2020 after a valiant battle with the complications of renal cancer.

John was born July 11, 1941 in Camden, New Jersey, to the late John Charles Baar, Sr. and Frances Teresa Downs. John graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland in 1962 and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Maryland Dental School in 1966. He served in the United States Air Force as a part of the US Dental Corps from 1966 to 1969 on Hickam Airforce Base in Honolulu, Hawaii. John practiced dentistry in private practice in Hyattsville, Maryland and Fulton, Maryland for more than 50 years. He was an active member of the International Association of Orthodontics and enjoyed teaching dental students.

He was married to the late Celeste Elizabeth (Madden) Baar in 1962 until her untimely passing in 2005. They enjoyed 43 years of marriage and had two children, Lisa (Paulette) Baar Baird and the late John Mark Baar, MD. He and his wife, Celeste, were active members of the community and enjoyed square dancing and spending weekends cruising on the Chesapeake Bay on their boats, the Cat’s Meow and the Kanaloa. More recently, he was the longtime companion of Joyce D. Garner from Howard County, Maryland.

He was a beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews, a doting grandfather to his grandchildren, who knew him as Poppa John, and a loyal and caring friend to many. He was devoted to the various family pets over the years of his life, most recently his cats Charlie and Tallulah.

John is survived by his daughter, Lisa, his grandchildren, Justine Elizabeth Baird and Alexander Andreas Baar Baird, his sister, Frances Kushma, his companion, Joyce, and many nieces and nephews, friends, and neighbors who were touched by his life.
