J. Steve Metcalf, age 70, of Fulton, MD died on December 31, 2020 with
his wife, Beverly and son Zachary at his side. Steve lost his 13 year battle
with cancer.
He was a compassionate and empathetic man bound by his convictions in
life to do what was right. Steve was exceptionally generous and selfless.
He was an avid reader. Steve had a list of the top 100 books in literature.
He read all of them. He loved music from the 1950s to 2020. Steve was
a Washington D.C. sport fan and he took great pride in teaching his son
about football and baseball. A favorite memory was a trip with his son to
spring training for the Washington Nationals. Steve loved dogs - all dogs
big and small.
Steve took pride in his 30 year career at NASA's Goddard Space Flight
Center. He contributed to the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO), Earth
Observing System (EOS) Program and was Deputy Project Manager for the
Earth Science Data Systems Project, a very large NASA project.
Throughout his tenure he found great satisfaction in mentoring and
guiding countless individuals. In 2011 he retired from NASA.
Steve was a brilliant, much loved and admired man. He will be sorely
missed.
Steve is survived by his wife, Beverly, son Zachary, sisters Amy and Gail,
nephew Steve and many friends and family in the area.
The family plans a celebration of his life as soon as it's possible (due to
COVID) later in 2021.
