Howard Bryan Bonham, Jr. of Olney, Maryland passed away peacefully on February 21, 2024 at age 95 years with family by his side.
Howard was a graduate of the University of Virginia where he majored in economics and activities included Honor Committee, Sigma Nu Fraternity, Cavalier Daily, Student Vice President of College of Arts & Sciences, TILKA, the IMP Society, lacrosse and wrestling. He also completed graduate studies in finance and management at the University of Oklahoma.
Howard served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and afterwards in the U.S. Army Reserve.
He was a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and received numerous awards for his financial writing and research. These awards included two Graham-Dodd awards for excellence in financial writing, presented to him by the CFA Institute. Later, he founded Howard Bonham Research, an independent investment research firm that published industry and stock reports.
During his early adult years, he was affectionately known as Howie and worked multiple summers as a lifeguard. Howard developed his love for writing during his youth, studying journalism through high school and college. He also enjoyed writing general news stringers for daily newspapers in Washington D.C.
After editing a daily newspaper and then the investment newsletter that became the Standard & Poor’s Weekly Outlook, he wrote investment reports and directed industry research for two Wall Street firms. He also served as a supervisory analyst for the New York Stock Exchange.
As a family man and member of the Episcopal church, Howard was devoted to his wife and children. Building furniture, playing tennis and handball, sailing, camping, and planning a variety of family vacations were among his many hobbies. He also enjoyed music, especially jazz, and was known to be a great dancer with a witty sense of humor and an affinity for playing piano, drums and banjo.
In retirement, he completed and sold publishing rights to The Complete Investment and Finance Dictionary and turned to his passion of creative writing. He authored and published many books, including Red Cross Rainmaker, The Official Wall Street Songbook, Wah-Hoo-Wah! and The Turning of Waitey McColl. During this time, he continued to publish articles on finance and current events for multiple website platforms as a freelance writer.
At his passing, Howard was survived by his beloved wife Nancy of 65 years, children Alison, Bryan, Holly and son-in-law Dennis, sister Jane, and many other loved ones.
A service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
