Florence Miller Obituary

Florence Miller passed into God’s hands peacefully with her family at her side on September 13, 2021.  She was the daughter of Francis (Frank) Immler and Alice Immler.  She was born in Ishkooda Alabama and as a child of a military family lived in Germany, California, Ohio, and Japan.  She began her college studies at Sophia University in Tokyo and completed her Undergraduate Degree in Health Education at the University of Maryland while having and raising three beautiful girls.  She completed her Master’s Degree in Gerontology at the Notre Dame of Maryland University.

She had a rich and varied professional career working as a Health Educator for the Howard County Extension Agency, the Holistic Health Center of Dr. Ron Parks, the Columbia Medical Plan and Carefirst / Blue Cross Blue Shield.  As part of her work at Carefirst she hosted a cable news show called “Health Today” produced at Howard County Community College.  The show was broadcast across Maryland and several other states.  She was a part of the Smoke Free Maryland Task force and worked on the initial palliative care protocols.  In her later years she worked for Sunrise Assisted Living and the Alzheimer’s Association.  She owned and operated a restaurant in Ellicott City called “Breakfast” in a historic property on Tongue Row.

She was passionate about helping people and developed a class on Tough Love for Parents and after the death of her daughter, was the Co-founder of the Howard County Compassionate Friends Chapter.  Florence loved nature, gardening, and the environment.  She was active in civil rights and environmental causes; playing Mother Earth in a delightful skit where she said: “You would think people living in their mother’s house would follow her rules.”   She volunteered at the Howard County Conservancy.

She had many avocations including painting, collage creation, flower arranging, gardening, and acting.  She was in numerous plays at the KC Theater and had the lead as Queen Christina in the ‘Abdication.’

Her spiritual journey was central to her life, and she was a member of Kittamaqundi Community Church for over forty years.  She was a caller of several Care Groups and led the Disciplined Life Care Group for many years.  Through KC she volunteered for many outreach activities.  She was a member of the Sacred Garden Task group and served as the chair of the Educational Leadership Team.

She is survived and loved by her husband Rick Miller and her daughter’s Kim Agee and Erin Logan, along with Kim’s husband Willy and five Grandchildren: Annie, Alice, Mark, Matthew, and Rose; also survived by sisters Frances Thomas and Margert Trotman; and brother Gregory Immler.  She was an adored Aunt and Great Aunt as well as a friend to her many dear and loving friends.

A Celebration of Her Life will be held on October 17, 2021 – 2:00 PM at Kittamaqundi Community Church, 5410 Leaf Treader Way, Columbia, MD 21044 followed by interment of ashes in the Sacred Garden.
