Dolores Bouland Obituary

Dolores M. Bouland, formerly of Columbia, Maryland, died peacefully on January 23, 2023, at age 95. Born October 17, 1927, in West Salem, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Thomas C. and Sylvia J. Walker and grew up in Butler, Pennsylvania.

On July 23, 2022, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 70 years, Heber D. Bouland. She is survived by her sons Dean Bouland, Daniel Bouland (Sue) and Robert Bouland (Linda); grandchildren Tyler Bouland (Melissa), Kelli Bouland Brown (Kevin), Adam Bouland (Alison), Sara Bouland, and Andrew Bouland (Karrah); great-grandchildren Zoe, Kai, Kea, Koa, Madison, Connor, and Adeline; sister Joyce Ortner; sister-in-law, Joanne McFarland, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.  She was predeceased by her brother, Thomas C. Walker, Jr.

Dolores was a 1944 graduate of Butler High School where she played clarinet in the marching band.  The 1940’s also saw Dolores training and flying open cockpit aircraft.

After high school Dolores attended Grove City College, Grove City, PA but left before completing her second year to work as a telephone company operator.  She later left the telephone company and moved to Takoma Park, Maryland to attend Washington Missionary College where she graduated in 1952 with a degree in nursing. While at WMC she continued her interest in music by singing in a women’s trio. It was also in 1952 that she married Heber D. Bouland in Takoma Park, Maryland. She later earned a Master’s degree from The George Washington University.  In addition to being a devoted homemaker, Dolores worked for many years as a registered nurse and later as a nurse educator.  She retired at age 79.

In addition to a long work life, Dolores and Heber were avid world travelers. Dolores was a trained vocalist and sang in several prominent choirs including the Hartford (Connecticut) Symphony Chorus and the National Adventist Choral Society. She also organized church choirs at two separate churches. Dolores was an enthusiastic line dancer as both participant and instructor.
