Daniel Jordan McMahon III of Dayton, MD passed away on Monday April 1st.
Danny Boy, Dan, Dad, Uncle Dan, Big Dan, Grandad and Coach are a few of the names he answered to in his 90 years of life.
He was born on July 10, 1933 to Jane (Newburg) and Daniel J. McMahon Jr. in Chicago, IL. Dan attended Loyola Prep and Xavier University where he majored in classics and pursued a MA in classics while teaching college algebra and being a research assistant.
He was drafted into naval intelligence and recruited from there to the newly formed National Security Agency. When a few of his children were in college he went back and got his MLS (Master’s in Library Science) at the University of MD. He was then assigned to converting the NSA Library systems to digital.
He was an avid reader and loved coaching everything from CYO to men’s recreational sports. What was most precious to him was his family and Catholic faith which he lived daily.
Dan is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Catherine “Peggy,” and children, Daniel (Donna) McMahon, Timothy (Sharlene Erdman) McMahon, Julianne (William) Farmer, Christopher (Maura) McMahon, Jacqueline McMahon (dec.), Gregory (Laura Bageant) McMahon and 11 grandchildren/spouses, and 11 Great-grandchildren. His sisters Susan (Ward) O’Neill (dec.) and Patricia (Doug) Askew. Also, survived by former daughter-in-law Mona McMahon, his two beloved sisters he inherited through marriage, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Gathering to honor Daniel’s memory will take place on April 14th at Donaldson Funeral Home of Clarksville, P.A.,12540 Clarksville Pike, Clarksville, MD 21029 from 1:00-4:00 PM.
A Mass will be held at St. Louis Catholic Church, 12500 Clarksville Pike, Clarksville, MD on April 15th at 10:00 AM.
