Carolyn Jean Wehland Frost died at age 83 surrounded by loved ones at Howard County General Hospital on September 26, 2023. She was born June 12, 1940 at Montgomery General Hospital to Mary and Elbert Wehland, and was a lifelong resident of Howard County.
Mrs. Frost, also known as Mom, Grandma Carolyn, Aunt Sissy, or just Sissy, was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fulton, MD. Her faith sustained her, but her joy came from the 50 years she dedicated to teaching the church’s youngest members about how much she and Jesus loved them. For hundreds of preschool children in the Scaggsville area over the last five decades, Sunday mornings meant getting a hug from Mrs. Frost, putting their offering in the little white church, and learning the words to Away in the Manger and Jesus Loves Me. She taught as many as three generations of children from the same families, including her own grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
When she wasn’t teaching Sunday School, she spent her time keeping in touch with her sisters and her many friends, cousins, and former classmates from Howard High School, from which she graduated in 1958. Mrs. Frost seemingly knew everyone, as well as their children and grandchildren, and knew every important milestone and detail of their lives. Even up to her last days, she meticulously hand-wrote cards for every birthday, anniversary, holiday and milestone for everyone in her life.
Before she retired to devote her life to her family in 1987, Mrs. Frost worked at the Equitable Bank in Laurel for 19 years. She enjoyed listening to Elvis Presley, Elton John, Ray Price and The Carpenters, and loved nothing more than sharing her daily bowl of ice cream with one of her grandchildren or great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jack, her son Steven (Youngju), her sisters Brenda Grooms (Jim) and Paulette Zottig, 7 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved son David, her sister Frances Clarke, and her brother Bing Wehland.
A Visitation will be held at Donaldson Funeral Home of Clarksville, P.A., Clarksville, MD on Sunday, October 8 from 2-4 and 6-8. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 9 at 11:00 am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Interment will follow immediately in the St. Paul’s cemetery, to be followed by a luncheon and fellowship in the church hall.
