Alfred M. Schrider, 93, of Fulton, MD passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his family. Al was born in Silver Spring, MD on October 21, 1928, one of 10 children of the late John B. and Mary V. Schrider (Lynch). Al married the love of his life, Joyce Ann DiVecchia on April 29, 1947. His passing was 3 days shy of their 75th wedding anniversary.
In his younger years, you could always find Al, along with his brothers Jack, Ed, Hezzie (Jerome) and Joe, on a baseball field somewhere in the county. Later, if Al wasn’t working or home with family, he would be on the golf course, often with his sons and sons-in-law. Al enjoyed a long and very successful banking career, retiring from Suburban Trust Company (a Maryland predecessor to Bank of America). He was active in local community affairs, serving as president of the Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce, the Silver Spring Kiwanis Club, and the local American Heart Association. A devout catholic, Al was also active in the Holy Name Society, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
While his civic and religious accomplishments were many, his greatest joy was the family he and Joyce created. With 10 children, 31 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren, gatherings at Grandpa and Grandma’s house were always an exciting event. Some of the best times for the family were their yearly Bethany Beach vacations, which they enjoyed every year since the 1950’s. Al’s love of his family was evident in his annual crab feasts, family holiday gatherings and celebrations. All his grandchildren and great-grandchildren will always fondly remember Grandpa’s Easter egg hunt, especially the annual winners of the golden egg! Even with such a large family, Al made each grandchild feel special.
Al is survived by his loving wife of 75 years, Joyce, and 9 of his ten children: son Michael (wife Kolleen), daughter Brenda Acton (husband John), daughter Patricia Oliphant (husband McKenzie), son John (wife Christy), daughter Sandra Swarr (husband Steven, deceased), son David, daughter Laura Stough (husband Dennis), son Daniel (wife Dédi), daughter Mary Jennifer (husband Paul Deuth) and daughter-in-law Donna (husband Robert, deceased). He is also survived by one sister, Cecelia Mauk, 30 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Al was preceded in death by 8 of his siblings. Sadly, he was also predeceased by his sixth child, Robert, granddaughter Carmon Molner, infant grandchildren Michael and Bradley, as well as several “angel” grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at Donaldson Funeral Home of Clarksville, P.A., 12540 Clarksville Rd (Rt 108), Clarksville, MD. The Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church, 12500 Clarksville Pike, Clarksville, MD, followed by burial at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery, Ten Oaks Rd, Clarksville, MD.
