Susan Elizabeth (Phillips) Miller passed away peacefully on February 14th, 2025, after a nine-year journey with Parkinson's Disease.
Susan was born in Washington, D.C., in 1946 and was a longtime resident of Clarksville, MD. Susan graduated from Glenelg High School in 1964, where she made many cherished lifelong friendships. Nurturing these friendships, she assisted in coordinating many reunions in the decades since. She graduated from the University of Maryland College Park and earned a teaching degree. There, too, she established a circle of lifelong friends whom she held close to her heart. She was an avid Maryland Terrapins basketball fan.
She taught briefly before marrying Garland Miller and having four children to whom she devoted her life. Susan was a past member and president of the Clarksville Elementary School PTA. She was also very involved in the Scouting program, serving in many roles with Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 737 in Clarksville. She dedicated time as District Commissioner of the National Pike District, Baltimore Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. She received the Silver Beaver Award, a council-level distinguished service recognition.
In her later years, she moved to Ellicott City and was a founding member of the Ellicott Meadows HOA Board, where she served several terms. After her move from Clarksville, she remained active in her faith community at St. Louis Catholic Church in Clarksville. Over her many decades as an active parishioner, she served on the Parish Council, orchestrated the annual raffle fundraiser, and was instrumental in the back-office operations of the yearly Clarksville Picnic and Spaghetti Dinner. She also embodied her faith through community outreach, serving with FISH and Our Daily Bread ministries. Susan was the founding Charter Organization Representative for Cub Scout Pack 108, chartered by the church. She thoroughly enjoyed sharing in worship and singing in the contemporary music group.
Susan, often and affectionately referred to as "Miller," worked as the office manager for Austronic Security Systems since its beginnings in Columbia, MD. She is remembered for her knowledge of the industry and her care for employees and customers alike. She worked with this same core group of coworkers for over thirty years in various incarnations of the company, including its final iteration, the launch of Vintage Security in 2001.
For the past three and a half years, Susan was a resident of Spring Arbor of Frederick assisted living community where she enjoyed community activities and visits from family and friends, especially her canine companion Cloe.
Often demonstrated through acts of service, Susan cherished her family, both immediate and extended, whether bonded by blood, faith, or friendship.
Susan is survived by her children, Drew Miller of Baltimore, MD, Erik Miller (Beth Ann) of Union Bridge, MD, Kari Myatt (Jayson) of Westminster, MD, and Bret Miller (Meg) of Columbia, MD; her grandchildren, James Myatt, Mikaela Miller, Ethan Miller (Bri), Patrick Miller, Liam Miller, Mason Myatt, and Paige Miller; and her siblings, Bill Phillips (Barbara) of Charlotte, NC, Bob Phillips (Carol) of Mt.
