Remembering Steve Kavakos: A Dad, A Coach, and the King of Dugout Wisdom

Steve Kavakos, 52, of Glenwood, Maryland, hung up his cleats and took his final victory lap on February 3, 2025, passing away peacefully at home February 3rd. Born on November 14, 1972, in Silver Spring, Md., Steve grew up in Columbia, where he mastered playing first base, delivered the best pep talks, and always made time for the people he loved.

Steve’s life revolved around three things: his family, his friends, and coaching (25 years). As a dad, he poured his heart and countless hours into coaching his kids. Colton fondly remembers the night before a big game when Steve stayed up for hours perfecting a pitching technique. Kendall remembers how her dad always made sure she knew she could do anything, whether it was on the field or in life. Brixton will always remember the daily conversations they would have about their favorite sports teams and cheering on the Redskins and Orioles.

Steve was a man who lived life his way, true to himself. Whether he was at the ballpark or hanging out with friends, Steve was always unapologetically Steve, and that was something we all admired about him.

Beyond being an incredible dad, Steve was a devoted son who called his parents daily and never passed up a chance to hang out with his dad. His sister, Kim, knew that if she needed anything, Steve was ready to help, give advice, or be her partner-in-crime for a four-wheeling adventure.

On the field, Steve was more than a coach; he was a mentor, a motivator, and sometimes an unpaid therapist to his players. Whether it was at Hammond High School or the numerous baseball and softball teams he coached, Steve had a knack for turning coachable moments into life lessons. His players knew that once you played for Coach Kavakos, you had a lifelong supporter in your corner.

Steve wasn’t just a coach, he was also one of the top insurance agents in the business. He built his career not just on numbers but on relationships, always making sure his clients felt valued, protected, and truly cared for.

Steve was also the ultimate friend whether you needed a laugh, a reality check, or a last-minute sub for your rec league softball team, Steve was just a call away, and sometimes a lengthy text message back..

Steve is survived by his wife, Natasha Kavakos, with whom he shared the greatest joys of his life, Colton (14), Kendall (12), and Brixton (12). His parents, Louis and Diane Kavakos, his sister Kim, brother-in-law Phil, and Emmalyn & Cameron Simmerer. He also leaves behind eight other nieces and nephews.

Now, as we say goodbye to Steve, we know his legacy will live on in every pitch thrown, every game played, and every life he touched. His voice will echo in the dugouts, in the stands, and in the quiet moments when we need a reminder to keep pushing forward.

Steve wouldn’t want tears, he would want us to take that love, that energy, and pass it on. So, in his honor, be the coach, the encourager, the friend who shows up. Lift someone up, share a kind word, and remind them they’ve got what it takes. That’s what Steve did, every single day and that’s how he’ll live on, in all of us.
