Rick Blackburn, 64, of Columbia, MD, passed away December 23, 2023. Born July 13, 1959, in Stamford, CT, he was raised in Houston, TX. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter.
Rick had a vibrant personality, great sense of humor and a passion for life. He brought joy to those around him with his quick wit and unforgettable laugh.
Rick is survived by his wife, Julie Blackburn, mother, Juanita Dean, sister, Stephanie Blackburn, sister, Kim (Craig) Carlton, daughter, Lindsay (Doug) Williamson, son Jarrett Scott, and daughters McKenzie Scott and Rose Scott. He was preceded in death by his father, Quill "Buddy" Blackburn, Stepdad Lloyd Dean, and daughter April.
Rick earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Maryland. He served in the United States Air Force from 1981 to 2002 with duty stations in Okinawa, Greece, Iceland, Italy, and Texas. Rick's dedication and commitment to his military service were exemplary, earning him several awards.
Following his military career, Rick held multiple positions working for the Department of Defense with the American Forces Network (AFN) in Germany and at Fort Meade, totaling 40 years of federal service. He retired as the Deputy Director for AFN in 2021.
Beyond his professional achievements, Rick was a master mason and Senior Warden of Patmos-Solomon’s Lodge # 70 A.F.& A.M. and the Secretary/Treasurer of the holding company. He was an FAA Certified pilot and loved flying drones. He enjoyed playing guitar, wearing Hawaiian shirts, and making things in his woodshop. He was a lifetime member of the Air Force Public Affairs Association and a dedicated volunteer at the Howard County Food Bank, where he made generous donations to support its mission.
We’re hosting a Rick Blackburn Fan Club meeting Friday, January 5th, from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm at The Meeting House in the Oakland Mills Interfaith Center at 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia, MD 21045. This gathering will be an opportunity to celebrate Rick's life and share cherished memories .
