Norma Moore Martof

Norma Martof, 78, of Columbia, MD, passed away on November 12, 2022 at Howard County General Hospital.  She was born August 2, 1944 in Savannah, GA, to Howard and Lois Moore. She grew up in Elbert County, Georgia.

She truly was a life long learner having graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Psychology/Zoology. She also held a Masters in Molecular Genetics (1973) and a Doctorate of Education (1996) from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Norma taught high school science for 34 years in the Prince George’s County Public School System. Her teaching career brought her to Fairmont Heights HS (23 years) and Flowers HS (9 years), in addition to other schools. During that time, she directed the writing of the play "Ray of Hope" by her AP Biology class. This play won the Maryland State Playwriting Contest sponsored by the National Institute of Health. She also won the Judith Ruchkin Research Award from the Maryland Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development.

She loved teaching and serving her community. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Bowie, MD. She was also president of the Prince George's Public School Retirees Association, a 15-year member of the Bowie Health Center Board along with many other education and teacher associations. She enjoyed theater, music, reading and writing and continued to take classes in writing and drawing in retirement. She adored her grandsons and loved all animals.

She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Tanya Martof, son-in-law, Mark Pennsy, and grandsons, Joseph and Joshua. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, two brothers and her sister.

A visitation will be held at Donaldson Funeral Home of Clarksville, P.A., 12540 Clarksville Pike, Clarksville, MD 21029 on Sunday, November 20 from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 6600 Laurel Bowie Rd, Bowie, MD 20715 on Tuesday, November 22 at 10:00 am.
