Mary Jean Gaines

Mrs. Mary Jean Gaines (Murphy), 87, passed away peacefully in her sleep with her family by her side on May 13, 2021.  Mary was born in Washington D.C. to Lucille White and James Bartholomew Murphy on November 25th, 1933. As a lifelong resident of the DC metro area, Mary enjoyed frequent trips to Ocean City, MD, shopping on the boardwalk and eating seafood dinners with her four boys.  She loved telling stories of her early life in Georgetown and her many encounters with famous people. Mary spent her later years in Columbia, MD at Ruth Keeton Assisted Living where she was well known and loved for her countless stories, sharp witted quips, and endless laughter.  Mary will be greatly missed by her family and friends including the present and past staff at Ruth Keeton.

Mary is survived by her four sons who she loved deeply, Bob Williams and wife Brenda of Marco Island, FL., Chris Gaines and wife Lynn (deceased) of Dunn, NC., Joe Gaines and wife Dianne of Madison, AL., Randy Gaines and wife Sally of Bethesda, MD.; her brothers James N. Murphy of Fredericksburg, VA. and Charles J. Murphy of Charlotte Hall, MD.; and her grandchildren Megan, Ryan, Isabella, and Christopher.

Graveside Services will be held May 21st at 11:00 AM at Parklawn Cemetery, 12800 Veirs Mill Rd, Rockville, MD, 20853.
