John Franklin Mcnelia, Ii

John Franklin McNelia II, age 86, of Silver Spring MD, died peacefully at home Sunday, June 16, 2024, surrounded by love of family and exceptional care takers.

John “Frank” was born in Salisbury, MD to the late Amos Beauchamp McNelia and Edna Esther Thomas-McNelia.  He was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Beauchamp McNelia.  He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who proudly served his country as a civilian engineer for the Navy for thirty-five years at the former NOL / NSWC “White Oak Lab”, and then for another twenty years as a private defense contractor at Advanced Technology Research (ATR).  He was also a Methodist Youth Fellowship Counselor and Sunday School Teacher in the 60’s.  In his youth, he achieved Chevalier in the Order of the DeMolay.  He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and playing bridge.  His loving and comforting smile, and his genuine interest and concern for others will be greatly missed, as well as his humor and love of conversation.  Our family is greatly honored to be part of a wide circle of neighbors and friends.

Surviving relatives include his wife of 64 years, Irma Jean Dodd-McNelia of Silver Spring MD and two children, John Andrew McNelia (Angela) of Harrington DE and Megan Dodd McNelia-Frantz (Mark) of McLean, VA, along with six wonderful grandchildren and one beloved niece.

A Visitation will be held at Donaldson Funeral Home of Clarksville, 12540, Clarksville Pike, Rt 108, Clarksville MD 21029 on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at 11:00 AM with a memorial service starting at 12:00 PM and reception to immediately follow. Interment is private.
