John (Yiannis) Antoniades

Dr. John "Yiannis" Antoniades (1953-2023) was the Executive Vice President for Meta Materials Inc., a Nasdaq listed nanotechnology company, building on a distinguished career at BAE systems, APTI and the Naval Research Laboratory.

Dr. Antoniades has received numerous awards and distinctions across government and industry. With a Ph.D. in Plasma and High-Temperature Physics from the University of Maryland College Park, a Masters and Bachelors of Science in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Dr. Antoniades is listed as an inventor on 7 patents and has over 100 publications.

Yiannis was born on the island of Corfu, Greece in 1953… an island that gifted him with his remarkable can-do attitude, his cheerful spirit, and his passion for life.

He later moved with his parents to Crete, where his brother Lakis was born. Crete helped build his enthusiasm that knew no boundaries, as well as his generosity and kindness!

Moving to Piraeus, the port of Athens, his family made a home in the suburbs of Moschato and then Neo Faliro, where Yiannis maintained a home to this day. His love for the Olympiakos club was born and, together with his passion for the open horizons that the Athenian Sea brings, Yiannis would continue to look toward the horizon as a true visionary!

He came to the USA as a Fulbright Scholar at the age of 17 where he began his studies. He maintained his passion for playing soccer, and even played rugby with the University of Maryland Old Boys. He met his wife Sandra Postman (Sandy) in 1984, married in 1987 and moved together to Fulton, MD where they resided happily until his passing. His son Tony was born in 1990 and daughter Jenna in 1993. Along with his wife, Sandy, his children became the joy and inspiration of his life.

To honor Yiannis and his kind, generous, positive attitude, please go out and help a stranger, mentor a youth, or invite someone who is lonely to your table. Try to be an optimist… it is contagious!

A memorial gathering will be held at Donaldson Funeral Home of Clarksville, P.A., 12540 Clarksville Pike, Clarksville, MD 21029, on Sunday, February 12th, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
