Joan Bailey

November 20, 1939 — February 8, 2021

Silver Spring, Maryland

Surrounded by her husband and children, Joan Aileen Bailey, 81, of Silver Spring, MD passed away peacefully the morning of February 8th, 2021 at Medstar Montgomery Medical Center in Olney, MD, after a brief battle with lung cancer.

Joan was born to Perry and Althea “Sue” Duston on November 20th, 1939. The oldest of three children, sister June and brother Douglas “Buzzy”. She graduated from Sherwood High School, class of 1957, in Sandy Spring, MD. Married to Gerald, her husband of 61 years, Joan worked as an insurance agent while raising her family, son Douglas and daughter Susan. Joan was a member of Liberty Grove United Methodist Church in Burtonsville, MD.

Raising her family on Magnolia Court, Joan took great pride in her home, especially her flowers. Gardening was one of her great joys. Along with her flowers, she loved birds and was quick to make sure the feeders were always full. Joan’s favorite vacation spot was the Outer Banks in North Carolina. You could often find her off in a corner reading her favorite book, playing cards and games with family or at the local shops looking for her next book or that perfect gift. She loved her weekly card games with the “ladies” and shopping at the Cricket Book store.

Joan is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Gerald Claude Bailey; her son Douglas Bailey, and his wife Victoria and her daughter Susan Markey. She is also survived by her three grandchildren, Bailey, Tori and Skyler; her younger sister June Keibler and her husband Steve, younger brother Douglas “Buzzy” Dustin.
