Howard Elmer Fleming, 100, passed away at Howard County General Hospital, Columbia, Maryland on August 14, 2022 from Covid-19.
Howard was born in Fairmont, WV on August 12, 1922, to the late Fred and Bessie Fleming. He was the second of three children. He is survived by son Stanley (wife Gail) Fleming of Ellicott City, MD, and daughter Judy (husband Larry) Gay of Hendersonville, NC. Howard has two grandsons, Matthew (wife Chris) Fleming of Laurel, MD and Adam Fleming of Baltimore, MD. He has two great grandchildren, Helen (19) and Connor (17) of Laurel, MD.
Howard was preceded in death by his wife of almost 74 years, Emma, in 2019, and by his younger brother, William Lawson Fleming. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Lewis (age 101), as well as two sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
Howard graduated from East Fairmont (WV) High School and served in the Navy during World War II. His ship had patrol duty in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. Howard and Emma Donnellan married in 1946. They moved from WV in 1954 and lived most of the rest of their lives in Clarksville, MD, Lakeland, FL, and Fulton, MD. He worked for 28 years at the National Security Agency as a material controller.
Howard tended a large vegetable garden and pitched for his church’s softball team. He played golf, tennis, and collected coins. He loved having his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren around.
Relatives and friends may visit New Hope Lutheran Church, 8575 Guilford Road, Columbia, MD on Monday, August 22, 2022 from 11:00 am to 12 noon, where the funeral service will be held at Noon. Interment to follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Highland, MD.
Donations to the American Heart Association are requested in lieu of flowers.
