Donald L. Warburton

Donald Leroy Warburton, 92, passed away on January 29, 2022. Born in Jamestown, NY, as a child, Mr. Warburton lived in Lexington, KY, where his father taught Physics, later moving to Redlands, CA, where he attended Redlands University. During the Korean war he served in the US Army with the Statistical Analysis Branch.

After service, in Aberdeen, MD, he joined the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Silver Spring, MD, in its Research and Technology Development Department where he served as a physicist and technical specialist in areas of advanced electrochemical power source technology, naval weapons systems, and mine and lithium battery safety. Known for seeing other's point of view, a colleague once remarked "If Warburton can't get along with him, no one can."

An avid gardener all of his life, he found joy in farming in Virginia and tinkering with all types of equipment. Subsequent to his retirement, Mr. Warburton and a few former colleagues formed a consulting company, CEA, specializing in lithium battery safety.

After suffering a stroke in 2016 he lived at home, unable to speak, still keeping an eye on things going on in the neighborhood until he passed.

Mr. Warburton is survived by his wife of 67 years, Eleanor Bancroft Warburton; two sons, Brian Alan Warburton and Edwin Earl Warburton; a daughter, Karen Fay Warburton; and a grandson, Neil Edwin Warburton. His son Leland Craig Warburton passed away in 2004.
