Dolores Jane Gill

Dolores (Dolly) Jane Gill, an extraordinary and remarkable woman, passed away peacefully at the age of 90, following a life filled with family, love, laughter, and adventure. It seems only fitting that she left us on a Sunday, November 1, All Saints' Day, when she was reunited in heaven with her beloved daughter, Wendy Pinnix, granddaughter, Victoria Lacher, and other family and friends.

Dolly was born on May 7, 1936, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to what she always described as her wonderful parents, Abraham Germanus Gill and Mariea Philomina Kemple. She was perfectly positioned as the fifth of nine children, with two older sisters and two older brothers, followed by two younger brothers and two younger sisters. When she was five years old, the family moved to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Dolly inherited many wonderful gifts from her parents. Perhaps the most meaningful was the deep Catholic faith they instilled in her, a faith she cherished and carried throughout her life. From her father, she treasured the memory of walking to early Sunday Mass, where he served as an usher. On the walk home, the two would share a doughnut-a simple tradition that remained a special memory throughout her life. From her mother, she learned to sew, developing such skill and confidence that she could create anything without ever needing a pattern. It was one of her many talents, reflecting her creativity, resourcefulness, and ability to figure things out for herself.

A gifted student, Dolly graduated as Valedictorian of her senior class at St. Vincent High School in Akron, Ohio, and received additional recognition for her service to others. Among the many scholarships she was awarded were two particularly notable opportunities: one to become the first woman engineer and another to study nursing at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She chose Catholic University, where she excelled academically, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in June 1958.

When it came time to take her nursing board examinations, Dolly famously chose not to study, confidently declaring, "You either know the material or you don't!" Her confidence proved well-founded. She achieved the highest average standard score among all candidates taking the exam for the first time that year.

It was also at Catholic University, during her freshman year, that Dolly met Earl Gill. They married just two weeks after her graduation, beginning the next chapter of her life and, eventually, the family that would become her joy.

Dolly often said that her greatest achievement was raising "eight only children." She took pride in recognizing and nurturing the unique personalities, gifts, and talents of each of her children: Deborah (Gary) Coble, Kerstin (Paul) Sobus, Gwendolyn Pinnix, Jocelyn (Steve) Scott, Ellen (William) DeGrafft, Earl (Mindy) Gill, Mariea (Brad) Benton, and Louise (Ryan) Bartley.

Dolly enjoyed a long and fulfilling career in nursing, often finding herself in leadership positions. She was always willing to lend a helping hand, never turning down a neighbor's request to wrap a sprained ankle or remove stitches. At the age of 62, she retired, looking forward to a new chapter filled with more time to enjoy her growing family: her eight children, 24 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.

As her children grew up and moved away, Dolly never viewed the distance as a loss, but rather as an opportunity to explore new places and create memories. She embraced the chance to visit her children wherever life took them, traveling to Australia, Belgium, and many states along the way. She turned what could have been miles between family members into wonderful opportunities for adventure and connection.

Retirement did not mean slowing down. Dolly joined two hiking clubs, volunteered at two parishes, joined strength training for seniors, and generously gave her time to FISH. She especially enjoyed traveling with her siblings, and children making memories along the way.

And then there was "Beers with Mom." After enjoying an afternoon beverage together, Louise posted a picture with the caption Beers with Mom. Recognizing that spending time with family and friends was far more valuable than any material possession, Louise encouraged others to plan an experience with Dolly. Thus, the tradition of "Beers with Mom"-a simple but meaningful way to celebrate being together. What began as a shared moment grew into a movement spanning multiple generations, locations, and friendships. It became a wonderful expression of Dolly's philosophy of life: that the greatest treasures aren't things we own, but the people we love, the time we share, and the memories we create together.

Dolly lived an extraordinary life, but perhaps what made it most remarkable was the love she gave so freely, the family she built, the lives she touched, and the laughter she inspired. She will be remembered not only for her remarkable accomplishments, but for the way she made each person feel special and for the countless memories that will continue to bring smiles to those who loved her.

Her legacy lives on in her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
