David Lee Scaggs

September 30, 1943 — May 16, 2024

Hampstead, Maryland

David Lee Scaggs of Hampstead, MD passed away on May 16, 2024 at the age of 80. He was born and raised in Scaggsville, Maryland on the family farm, he was the son of the late Melvin E. Scaggs and Myrtle (Connell) Scaggs. He was the husband of 59 years to Lynda (Berry) Scaggs, formerly of Clarksville, Maryland and father of Gena (Scaggs) McNichol and Shealeen Tracy Scaggs.

David always worked hard milking cows before school, raising chicks, making hay and tending to the garden with siblings. He was driving farm tractors long before he had a driver’s license.

He attended Glenelg High School, where he was the graduating class of 1961. He played football, was a member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and 4H. His football team went undefeated in 1961 and they were the only class to be undefeated since. Although they attended the same high school, he met his wife Lynda on a blind date in Ocean City, MD on a trip with friends after graduation. They spent the next 50 years living in Scaggsville on their farm where they raised horses, cattle and made hay. Their daughters also immensely enjoyed growing up at the farm and riding horses.

David and his brother Elwood started Scaggs Brothers Excavating Company which started when the town of Columbia was just beginning to develop. They were one of the first contractors to start work there and stayed in business for almost 50 years. It became a successful family business along with the start of Pools Unlimited which was sold to his sister, Mary Ellen. Family was important and they worked hard and lived their lives together.

Just as hard as he worked, he played hard. He had many hobbies and pursued each one with an all or nothing passion. Some of these included racing cars, deep sea fishing, and showing cutting horses. In 1990 he and his long time friend Randy Chartier ran successfully for the National Cutting Horse Association World Standings where David ranked 6th in the Non-Professional division for the year. David also had his Captain’s license, pilot’s license, and National Cutting Horse Association Judging card.

In 2015, David and Lynda moved to Hampstead, MD and spent time being close to family. He loved watching his granddaughter, Bryce, ride and show horses. He will always be known for the boisterous laugh, toughness as well as kind heartedness, and big grin.

David is survived by his wife Lynda, daughter and son-in-law Gena (Scaggs) McNichol, James B. McNichol, granddaughter Bryce McNichol, sister and brother in law Mary Ellen (Scaggs) Kane, Patrick Kane of Sykesville, MD and J. Elwood Scaggs of Denton, MD, nieces and nephews Kim Leighton Wolbodlt, Brian Leighton, Fred Leighton, Keith Ritter, Diane (Ritter) Moore, James Scaggs, Lucretia (Scaggs) Villar, Kenneth Kane and Mark Kane as well as many great-nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. He is predeceased by his parents Melvin and Myrtle Scaggs, daughter Shealeen Scaggs, sister Francis (Scaggs) Leighton and Doris (Scaggs) Ritter.
