Chris David Hoyson

September 30, 1959 — July 8, 2023

Clarksville, Maryland

Chris David Hoyson of Clarksville, MD (age 63), passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side on July 8, 2023.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Chris is survived by his wife Charlotte (née Jakobsson), children Ellen, Joey, Tina, Lauren, and son-in-law Paul LaFleur, as well as his siblings Reid (Marilyn), Neal (Sue), Lynn (Bob) and Karen and nieces and nephews, Jacob, Maura, Joe, Brian, and Danny. Chris was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Alberta (Coyle) Hoyson, his maternal grandparents Bernard and Adelaide Coyle, and his paternal grandparents Mitchell and Anna Hoyson.

A 1982 graduate of Penn State University, Chris was a devoted Nittany Lion and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Chris started his career in construction as a Project Engineer, working for The Whiting and Turner Contracting Company, in Baltimore, Maryland.

Over the course of his career, he was involved in many projects throughout the country. This included a relocation to the west coast of Florida, where two of his children were born. Once back in Maryland, Chris oversaw the Washington D.C. office (his home office), located in Greenbelt, MD. Chris was the heartbeat of the D.C. office, where he inspired and supported each person who worked for him. Chris was a visionary, a voice of reason, and always your biggest champion. Chris finished his career as an Executive Vice President, and most recently celebrated his 40-year anniversary with Whiting-Turner.

Chris was a proud supporter of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce’s newly founded “Teacher Externship Program” that launched this week. He was also very involved in the business community as a member of the Board of Governors for the Washington Building Congress, the Greater Washington Board of Trade, and Leadership Maryland Class of 2017.

His enthusiasm for life, work, and family inspired many. His passion for construction transferred to his personal life as he not only completed his own home improvement projects but also offered his engineering skills, tools, and a helping hand to his friends, neighbors, and family. After being diagnosed in April 2021, with head and neck cancer, he dove right into treatment options together with a great team of doctors and advisors. Chris underwent surgery to remove the tumor and lymph nodes. He was optimistic and brave throughout the many chemotherapies, and radiation treatments. He fought hard against this disease. After his death he became a tissue donor, and was able to help someone in need.
