Barry T. August

January 31, 1939 — February 15, 2024

Clarksville, Maryland

Barry Theodore August, 85, of Clarksville MD, passed into the peace of Christ suddenly, early in the morning on February 15, 2024 at Howard County Hospital.

Barry was born on January 31, 1939 in Washington D.C. He had a happy childhood among his many friends and family. After graduating from Anacostia High School in 1957, he attended the Capital Radio Institute earning an associated degree.  After serving in the Air Force Reserve, he was hired as a Communications Radio Engineer for Watkins Johnson Company.  After twenty-three years with Watkins Johnson, Barry started his own small car repair business; and in 2001, he retired at the age of 62.

He was an avid "car guy" and spent countless hours under the hood of numerous special cars. In 2010, Barry was awarded the very special "Historical Vehicle" badge from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany for owning the oldest 1965 Porche 911 in America.

Barry learned to ski when he was 39 and took the family on ski vacations to Canada. Later, he enjoyed numerous ski trips out west with family and friends. The family purchased a small timeshare in Ocean City, MD in 1979 and he truly enjoyed those  family beach vacations during the last week of June for over 40 years.  He and his wife, Sandy, spent over 20 years Square Dancing with the local group in Columbia MD.  Later in life, he and Sandy took many cruise vacations, including trips to the Caribbean, Panama Canal and Alaska. His last cruise was one week before his passing.

Since his retirement, Barry could be seen taking his daily walk down Linden Church Road while collecting trash along the way, puttering around in the garden pulling weeds, on his tractor mowing the lawn, or in the driveway tinkering with or washing a car. He spent a lot of time watching old movies and interesting documentaries and would share details of all the things he learned with his wife, kids, and grandkids.

Barry lived an honest and unpretentious life. He loved his wife, children, and grandchildren and was never happier than when he was celebrating life with each and all of them.  He was preceeded in death by his parents, Theodore and Anna, and his sister Eleanor.  Barry is survived by his wife, Sandra; his children, Glenn (Kimberly), Adam (Julieta) and Alexandra; his grandchildren, Jessanna (Tyler), Koda (Laura), Kai, Nyah, Maximus, Maddox, AJ, and Anna; his great-grandchildren, Elias and Vera; and sisters-in-law Pat (Robert) List, and Merry Straus.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Pauls Lutheran Church, 11795 Route 216, Fulton MD 20759 on Friday, February 23, 2024 at 11:00 AM. Followed by Lunch in the Parish Hall.
