The adored father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away in his sleep on June 23, 2024.
Al was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Catherine (nee Logan). He is survived by sons Andy, David, Tony, and Steve, their wives and 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, as well as his sister Pat (Burdett).
Al was born in 1931 to Pasquale and Genevieve Di Battista in Washington D.C., the fourth of five children. He attended St. Martin’s grade school, St. John’s College High School and graduated from St. Anthony’s, where he met Catherine. They were married in March of 1953.
As a member of the Army’s 9th Infantry, he fought in Korea and earned several commendations, including 2 Bronze Service Stars and the National Defense Service Medal.
Upon return to the States, Al and Catherine moved from the District to Maryland, raising their four sons in Calverton and residing there as parishioners of St. Joseph’s of Beltsville for nearly 50 years until moving to Fulton, MD in 2009. Al worked for C&P/Bell Atlantic Telephone Company, where he worked for more than 30 years before retiring in 1991.
Visitation hours will be held on Monday, July 8 from 5-8 pm at Donaldson Funeral Home of Clarksville, P.A., 12540 Clarksville Pike, Rt 108 Clarksville, Maryland 21029. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, July 9 at 11:00 AM at St. Louis Catholic Church, 12500 Clarksville Pike Clarksville, MD 21029, followed by a funeral procession and burial ceremony at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
