Alice Renee Gunner, age 77, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on January 14, 2026, in Columbia, Maryland.
Alice devoted her life to caring for others. A Registered Dietitian, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Food and Nutrition from Marywood University in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, and went on to lead food and nutrition programs at hospitals, nursing homes, and for the Department of Juvenile Justice.
She found joy in life’s simple pleasures — her dogs, summers at the beach in Sea Isle City, traveling abroad, gardening, and mystery novels. Cooking was one of her greatest expressions of love; she delighted in feeding anyone who walked through her door and believed food was meant to bring people together. A devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan, Alice proudly held her ground even while married to a lifelong New York Giants supporter.
Alice was the beloved daughter of Arthur and Alice Marie Sweeney, and the wife of the late John Bruce Gunner, with whom she shared more than 50 years of marriage. She is survived by her siblings, Arthur Sweeney, Anne Marie Schreiber, and Kara Cummings; her children, Jennifer Gunner Meyer, Alison Gunner, Christina Gunner-Tomasetti, and Elizabeth Gunner Schermer; her sons-in-law, Charles Meyer, Niels Gunner Schermer, Brian Tomasetti, and David Surin; and nine grandchildren who loved her snuggle buggles and homemade cookies: Jania, David, Kylie, Surie, Augusta, John, Montgomery, Francis, and Penelope. She was also preceded in death by her son, John Francis Gunner, and her husband, John Bruce Gunner.
Alice will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her warmth, generosity, and the love she so freely gave.
