On March 20, 2020, John Joseph (“Johnny Joe”) Hurly passed away, surrounded by his loving family, after a prolonged illness.
As all who knew him know, Johnny loved science. After earning his Bachelor of Science from Penn State University, John went on to earn a PhD from University of Cincinnati. He was a member of Theta Xi Fraternity. John began his career working as a nuclear physicist at the Mound Advance Technology Center in Dayton Ohio before moving onto a successful career as a Senior Research Chemist at the National Institutes of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg Maryland. If you had a science question, John could answer it.
John also loved spending time with his family, including at their home in Cape May or on their many “family vacations.” At every family gathering, John brought joy and he was adored by his many nieces and nephews. John also shared with family and friends his love of movies, reading, sports, music, concerts and dancing, especially 80’s music. When John was at Penn State, he worked behind the scenes at many music concerts and he had great stories about his interactions with the headliners. John loved to bake and was known for his sweet bread and Jewish apple cakes. John was loved by all who knew him.
Johnny is survived by his parents, Helen and John and four siblings and their spouses, Kathy, Stephen and Lisa, Irene and Matt, and Michael and Jen and eight nieces and nephews, Silas, Nathan, Kenny, John, Alex, Julia, Maeve and Case and his beloved pet Stella.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic a memorial service will be held at a future date. We welcome you to leave comments on the message board for the comfort of the family.
