Juana Antonia Lennon (“Toni” to her loved ones) passed this Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at the age of 78 following a brief illness.
Born in Madrid in 1940, Toni was the daughter of Lucinio Gutierrez and Carmen Magro. At the age of three (2) her mother, Carmen, passed away. Toni, her sister Mari and brother Lucinio were raised by her father, her stepmother Teresa, and step-aunt Francisca (“Tia Paca”).
Toni was an accomplished student at the British Academy in Madrid. Her command of English and bright mind secured her professional opportunities that were rare for women in Spain. In 1962, Toni met Peter--then a young US Air Force sergeant stationed in Spain-- and within six (6) months they were married and honeymooning across the Mediterranean in Spain, France, and Italy driving a VW bug and camping everywhere they stayed.
Her life’s greatest pride and achievement--her children-- began arriving in 1964 when Toni delivered Elizabeth at Torrejon AFB, Spain; Michael in New Mexico (1965), Peter in Florida (1966), Paul in Virginia (1969), and finally back to Spain for her youngest “Tuquiño” David (1972). Toni devoted her life to raising her children, always placing her family and dear friends above herself.
In the early 80’s, she returned to “paid work” eventually moving to the US Census Bureau’s International Statistical Training unit where she remained until she retired. Always on the move, she loved to travel, dance, tell funny stories, listen to music and eat good food--passions she instilled in her family who continue the tradition today.
She leaves behind her husband of 56 years, Peter, her five (5) children--Elizabeth, Michael, Peter, Paul, and David--nine (9) loving grandchildren--Diego, Pablo, Isabella, Cristina, Catalina, Mariana, Sophia, “Pauly” and Alexander--as well as, an extended web of family and friends.
Toni /Mom / Abuela - those you left behind are heartbroken. As we continue to travel, dance, tell funny stories, listen to music, and eat good food, we will remember you and savor all the gifts of living you gave us.
Though this is a difficult time, the family would like to express our gratitude to everyone for your love, support, and generosity. It is immensely appreciated. Thank you,
